These are not statistics from another city. They are our neighbors — mothers, infants, and families across Southwest Michigan who deserve to be seen.
The medicine to care for these families already exists. What's missing is a system built around relationship instead of transaction — and the will to reach the people it leaves behind. We see three gaps, and we refuse to accept any of them.

Survival
Where a baby is born — and to whom — still changes their odds of reaching a first birthday. In our own county, that gap is measured in lives, not percentages.

For a huge share of our neighbors, good care is priced out of reach. When money decides who gets seen, the families who need care most go without it.

Even those who can afford it are rushed through ten-minute visits — a number on a chart, never truly heard. The relationship at the heart of healing has been squeezed out.

And the gap runs deeper than geography: in Kalamazoo County, Black infants still die at 2.5× the rate of white infants (7.0 vs 2.8 per 1,000). Progress on the average hasn't closed the racial gap — and it persists across our region.
